THE WORLD OF SPIRITS

Spirits: VARIETY OF FLAVORS

Spirits is the largest category of alcoholic beverages: they range from brandies such as Cognac to grain spirits such as whiskey on to countless liqueurs. But what exactly defines spirits, how are they made and what distinguishes them from other alcoholic beverages such as wine and beer?

WHAT EXACTLY IS A SPIRIT?

Spirits are high-proof, alcoholic beverages with a minimum alcohol content of 15% vol. Despite the variety of spirits, their alcoholic base always origins from distillation.
In distillation fermented vegetable products are heated in order to separate the alcohol from other substances.

WHY ARE THERE SO MANY DIFFERENT SPIRITS?

The many different spirits are created through the different ingredients and processing methods. For example, whiskey and vodka can both be distilled from rye – whiskey then matures to perfection in barrels, while vodka is produced as the purest possible distillate.

WHAT DISTINGUISHES SPIRITS FROM OTHER ALCOHOLIC DRINKS?

Wine and beer have been around for thousands of years, while spirits have only been documented since the Middle Ages. This has to do with the different manufacturing processes: the fermentation of fruit and grain has been documented early on, while the distillation of potable alcohol was only discovered much later.

Beer and wine are usually drunk neat. They are also mixed as spritzers, in Lillet or Hugo. Spirits in particular are suitable for mixing in cocktails due to their high alcohol content. With their many basic ingredients, they open up a huge universe of flavors for us: In popular drinks like the Aperol Spritz or Gin and Tonic, in classics like the Negroni or Manhattan, as well as in international drinks like the Mojito or Caipirinha. Cheers.
